Chapter 03 - The Escape of Canis

“ESCAPE CANIS,” Nithari shouted at the top of his voice.

Obeying the words of the owner, Canis accelerated more than ever before. The belt was dragged through the mist of the grass and red mud behind the garage shed. This time ears not just flapped but swung like the wings of a hummingbird. Hitting the rocks that came in the way and forced body through the thick bushes, knee slipped, but the run didn’t stop. All along the way, its mind was full of Nithari, believing that the owner is sound. And came to rest after about one and a half kilometer—panting.

Closed-circuit cameras were the only hope for the police to protect themselves from the pressure by the media and people. After the chain of brutal killings by the ‘claw man’, the name given by the people to the killer, the fear of the people increased to the peaks. Which in turn created thrust on the police department in catching the serial killer.

After the installation of the cameras, there was a detailed study of the pictures it gave. Mainly dealt with the location of the killer and the way he mostly used. The appearance of the criminal was heavily published, rewards were announced. But nothing could win over the fear of people.

Finally, there came a ring to the advertised tollfree number. That concluded of locating a single house on the outskirts of the city, and the man who lived there was never seen before. Many matches were found—the dog and all the roads in the record of murders, connected to this. Taking every factor into consideration, a secret cum sudden attack was planned.

The house appeared like an old transport office, lying just down the highway, with rusted silver fencing and tiny black gate. Two houses, a big and a small shed were noticed inside the fencing. The police didn’t know, the gate sound was the calling bell to Nithari. Soon ordered Canis, watching the police through the curtained window. Guessing he would get shot if he tries to run.

Later, Nithari tried acting cool, but the winter jacket he wore on one of the murder days, extra knives for the claw weapon, found at the grinding machine proved him as the culprit.

Nithari was sitting alone behind the glass wall, just before the beginning of the police interrogation. Canis was all over his mind, he was not worried that he is caught, but he counted seconds in minutes after Canis left him.

When every speck of detail showed he is the real killer, but the motto behind the killings is that what the police needed. The question was asked, everyone settled, giving his time to answer.

The recorders were turned on, a tiny little lens on a tripod faced him. A long silence made him struggle for his first words, he didn’t feel the freedom to speak, which he enjoyed with Canis. But finally, he has to speak out.

Incidents in Nithari’s life made him averse towards the people in society. It was a very bad day, on which he decided to go against each one in society.

From his family of four, Canis was only left for him. His beautiful wife and intelligent son were killed by thugs. Nithari always believed that even one person stepped forward, his wife and son could be alive today. That day, that very minute, he multiplied hatred against people, he felt angry at each one he saw around.

In the earlier days, a few times he was sent to jail, for his murder attempts. Though he spent about a year in jail, his anger was never reduced, yet he found some subtle and tactic ways of killing people.

About a month after he was caught, he was presented at the court and he was sentenced to death. Every person in the city felt happy, remembering every sleepless night they went through in fear.

But they didn’t know, nothing is constant. And that their sleepless nights will be back. This time the reason will be CANIS, a mad dog.
